Baseline

The Baseline attack sends goals directly to the target with no transformation — no obfuscation, no persuasion, no iterative refinement. It exists as a control condition: a way to measure how often the target complies with a harmful request when asked plainly, so that every other attack's success rate can be interpreted relative to it.

Overview

Baseline is the simplest attack in HackAgent and is typically the first one you run:

  • Establishes a floor: If Baseline already succeeds on a goal, the target has no meaningful defense against it and more sophisticated attacks aren't needed for that goal.
  • Contextualizes other attacks: A PAIR/TAP/AdvPrefix success rate is only meaningful compared to how often the same goals succeed with no attack at all.
  • Fast smoke test: One request per goal, no attacker model required — just the target and (optionally) a judge.
  • hack_chain seed step: Because it never mitigates via obfuscation, it's a natural first step in a hack_chain fallback ladder — only goals the target refuses plainly are escalated to real attacks.

How Baseline Works

Attack Flow

  1. Goal Definition: Specify the behaviors you want to test.
  2. Direct Submission: Each goal is sent to the target exactly as written — no template, no cipher, no persuasion.
  3. Evaluation: The target's response is scored against the configured objective (pattern match, keyword match, or an LLM judge).
  4. Reporting: Results include the raw response and a success/mitigation verdict per goal.

Shared Goal Category Classifier

Like all attacks, Baseline accepts a top-level category_classifier block that classifies each goal at tracking time, independent of judge scoring.

Interpreting Results

agent.hack() returns a list of AttackResultone entry per goal, since Baseline sends each goal exactly once with no transformation.

attack_prompt being identical to goal is the whole point of this attack — if it ever differs, something transformed the goal upstream.

Key Metrics

  • Baseline ASR: the fraction of goals the target complies with when asked plainly. This is the control floor — every other attack's success rate should be read relative to it.
  • response_length: a quick refusal signal; terse replies usually indicate a safety response.

An attack that scores no higher than baseline has not demonstrated anything.

Multi-Attack Chains (hack_chain)

Because Baseline never obfuscates the goal, it's ideal as the first rung of a hack_chain fallback ladder: only goals the target plainly refuses get escalated to more sophisticated (and more expensive) attacks.

escalate_only_mitigated=True (the default) drops any goal Baseline already succeeds on, so CipherChat only spend budget on goals that actually needed extra effort. See the HackAgent.hack_chain reference for the full behavior.
